Kent McCarty brings years of experience working with high‑school performers — and a genuine love for helping teens unlock their creative potential. Kent started doing improv as a teenager and has decades of acting and improvisational experience in short form, long form, and sketch comedy in Portland and Eugene. He’s also been the director of ComedySportz at Milwaukie High School for more than 20 years.
Kent’s core belief is that improv is life. We all improvise every day, and we should be saying “yes and” to each other more. Improv can help us find ways to build better communities both on and off stage.
This high‑energy, beginner‑friendly improv class is designed for teens who are ready to take risks, trust their instincts, and learn the foundations of improvisational theater.
The six‑week series is deeply rooted in character work—because character is what drives great improvisation. Students will explore:
Instantaneous character creation and how it sparks imagination
Taking risks on stage and embracing bold choices
Trusting fellow actors to build scenes together
Listening and responding in the moment
Yes And collaboration
Story structure basics that make improvised scenes shine
They’ll also gain confidence, learn tools for collaboration and ensemble work, enjoy a supportive space to take creative risks, and share a whole lot of laughter. Join us!
